Challenges of E-folios

While there are many benefits to the e-folio, they also pose many challenges for the creator and evaluator. They include:

*Cost: While some e-folio software is available for free, much of it comes with a high price tag.

*Authenticity: With e-folios there is a possibility of misrepresentation or a person submitting work that is not his/hers. However steps for verifying authenticity can be developed by evaluators.

*Evaluation: Because some of the criteria for evaluating portfolios are unique to disciplines and other criteria need to be developed to help reviewers search for hidden talents,developing those criteria will prove challenging (Carliner, 2005).

*Technology/Compatibility: If the e-folio is developed in a particular platform or with software that is not readily available to all users/viewers they may have difficulty viewing the e-folio (or may not be able to view it at all). E-folios have similar difficultites with interoperability. Although e-folio systems exist the portfolios they produce many not be interchangeable. But interoperability can be fixed through standards, which are beginning to emerge from groups like IMS. (Carliner, 2005)
